Best Practices for Beneficiary Designations
What considerations should be made when selecting a beneficiary of retirement account? This presentation will touch on the best practices to consider and several of the choices that are available to account owners when they work their advisors to select beneficiaries for their accounts. There are a number of factors to consider to avoid unintended consequences and to achieve the true goal of the clients estate. Whether to minimize taxes, stretch out distributions, or preserve other more tax-advantaged assets, we will explore key ideas to help you better serve your clients with these important decisions.

Susan Mercure
Susan Mercure of the law firm Higgs, Fletcher & Mack LLP specializes in sophisticated estate planning and estate administration matters. She has represented high net worth clients both in estate planning and estate and trust administration and is well regarded within our community.
Susan’s undergraduate degree is from Stanford University and she holds both a law degree and a Master of Law degree in tax. She has been a certified specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law for over twenty years and has been named to the 2017 “Best Lawyers” list published by U.S. News and World Report annually. Susan is active in the YMCA and is a past chair of Mission Valley YMCA’s board of management, the immediate past chair of the YMCA of San Diego County Board of Governors, and is chair elect of the YMCA of San Diego County Board of Directors.
